Idea Planning Canvas
DescriptionThis tool helps middle schoolers work together to CREATE a pitch for their idea. The Idea Planning Canvas guides you through 5 steps of pitching an idea with 3 guiding questions for each step. As a team, research and write your pitch script, then practice pitching out loud. This will get you ready to share your idea with clarity and confidence!

Goals
Using this tool, middle schoolers will be able to...
- Collaboratively state a clear goal, define the underlying problem, identity why this idea matters to the community
- Individually research their assigned step (color) and write 3-6 sentences to create their step of the pitch script
- Practice presenting their pitch script with confidence and clarity (without reading)
Steps
- As a team, answer the top row of questions on the paper Idea Planning Canvas (above the dotted line) The 3 questions are: "What's your goal? 2) What problem you are solving? 3) Why does this idea matter?"
- As a team, decide who will be pitching each step (color). Write your name on that colored box.
- Individually research the guiding questions for your step and write 1-3 sentences for each guiding question.
- Share your answers with a teammate. Ask, "What should I add, reword, or remove?" Listen and improve it!
- On the Digital Canvas, find your color and type pitch script (your 1-3 sentences for each guiding question)
- Practice reading your pitch script (all 3-9 sentences you wrote) out loud with confidence together as a team!
Check-in
Share pitch scripts out loud and providing feedback.
- Try pair/sharing with a teammate or with another team.
- Try role playing a silly character to give direct feedback.
Empower-up
Achieve your goal early? You are empowered to take on the role-playing of a silly character to give feedback on other teams' idea pitches! To give feedback use:
- The Venn Diagram of a Good Idea tool
- Use the Pitch Inspection tool
Notes
The Idea planning canvas works best with teams of 5 so 1 person takes responsibility for each step (color).
Researching, writing, practicing, and refining pitch scripts on the Idea Planning Canvas typically takes 1-2 hours.
